Sarah
Ann Butler, a native of Sanford, Florida was an
excellent scholar, leader, and role model.
She attended the public
schools of Seminole County, graduating in 1960 from Crooms
Academy. Furthering her education, she attended Volusia
County Community College, where she earned an Associate
of Arts Degree, and Tennessee A. and I. State University.
She completed Lincoln Business College and later received
her Bachelor's of Science Degree at Edward Waters College
in Jacksonville, Florida where she specialized in Business
and Special Education.
She spent the majority of her life
teaching others. She was employed by the Duval County School
Board as a Special Education Instructor. She worked with
children who had special needs and emotional handicaps.
She also worked with numerous young adults through the GED
Program at Florida Community College. Several would later
go on to pass the exam and receive the equivalent of a high
school diploma. Sarah A. Butler always taught her students
to press on because education was their key to a better
future.
In 1997, Jan Hice (SBA '92) and four other Georgetown alumae
-- Karen A. Clanton (CAS' 92), Angelique McLin-Kelley (SBA'92),
Ava Rogers (SFS'92), Tajamika A. Paxton (SBA'92) -- established
the Sarah A. Butler Scholarship Fund to support students
who require financial assistance to buy books, pursue study
abroad opportunities and prepare for graduate school. We
decided that we could make a greater impact if we pooled
our individual donations. |
